Beach Accommodation Near Cairns
If you head just out of Cairns, either up or down the Tropical Queensland Coast, you’ll find the gems of the Coral Sea. Here is a string of beaches, spread out over 26 kilometres of rainforest-fringed coastline, with white sand, crystal waters and steamy mountainous hinterland.
There is a host of accommodation to be found on and near Cairns’ beaches that range from backpacker’s hostels, cheap hotel rooms and budget apartments to luxury resorts with private beaches, 5 star private villas and family-friendly self-serviced suites. Machans Beach - Machans Beach is the closest to Cairns and staying here puts you close to the restaurants, nightlife and markets of the CBD but with the quiet and calm of a suburb with a gorgeous stretch of sand. Machans Beach is pretty left-field and local events range from salsa nights to regular full moon parties that draw backpackers, families and locals alike. Hotel and resort development has so far been kept at bay through staunch local opposition.
Trinity Beach - The two protective headlands here which means that the waters are deep, clear and incredibly calm. When people think tropical paradise, white sand and palm-trees, they picture Trinity, and just back from the sand, the tourists mingle happily with the local population, creating a friendly bustle in the shops and restaurants.
Dozens of tours head to the rainforest or the reef from here and there is plenty of choice with regards to accommodation. There is affordable luxury here with apartments and family friendly resorts right on the sand. Budget hotels and cheap properties are set back a little further into the town.
Kewarra and Clifton Beach - Just 20 minutes from the Cairns CBD with its party-atmosphere-pedigree, are the deserted beaches of Kewarra and Clifton that maintain a friendly and local vibe making this a great family holiday destination. There has been little development here quite simply as the locals own all the property and the surrounding areas of natural beauty and ecological importance allow for development. This is great as the secluded hotels and peaceful B and Bs here make for some the most relaxed holidays in Queensland.
The rocky headland protects the waters keeping them calm and child-friendly with stinger nets in place in the high season (make sure that you stick between the flags!) all just a few minutes from country clubs, luxury resorts and self contained holiday houses and apartments,
Mission Beach - is a scenic 2 hour drive South of Cairns and is the getaway to Dunk and Bedarra Islands. Selection of restaurants, cafes and boutiques. There are two great barrier reef trips which depart daily as well as skydiving, white water rafting, day trips to the islands, water sports and river cruises. One of the biggest drawcards to Mission Beach is the World Heritage rairlforests of the Wet Tropics. Sixty per cent of Australia's butterflies can be found here, including the magnificent Birdwing and the Ulysses species. Mission Beach is also home to the Southern Cassowary.
Yorkeys Knob - A much more developed suburb with an 18 hole golf course, a marina, boating club, shopping centre and dozens of accommodation options. The main beach has stinger nets in season and is regularly patrolled. This is also in the top ten wind- and kite-surfing destinations on the planet when the famous Tradewinds make the area an international focal point.
Holloways Beach - is narrow - only a couple of metres in width - but is a lovely spot to cool off, take the dog for a walk, sit and enjoy the fresh air, or cast out a fishing line. A very nice restaurant and café make Holloways a pleasant beach in all circumstances.
Cape Tribulation - is a Daintree Accommodation and tours for a World Heritage Holiday. Located in the heart of the Daintree forest, home to the oldest rainforest on the planet and adjacent to the Great Barrier Reef. You will need to spend at least 3-4 days with the tours and activities in the area : snorkeling, horse riding, cruising the river, walking in the Daintree National Park, enjoying the deserted beaches and many more.
Yepoon - has beautiful beaches around the Capricorn Coast. Just off the coast are the Keppel group of islands including Great Keppel, North Keppel and Humpy Island. With National Parks and State Forests in the area
Note: The above beaches have stinger net during the stinger season. When the stinger net is in place, please only swim inside its protective barriers. Swimming outside the nets exposes you to unnecessary dangers.
